Elderberry Syrup

The OG syrup for when you’re actually sick. Even better- it tastes amazing.

What You’ll Need

  • 2 cups filtered water

  • 1/2 cup dried elderberries or 1 cup fresh elderberries

  • 1-2 tbsp fresh ginger, grated or 1/4-1/2 tsp ground ginger*

  • 1 tsp ground cinnamon*

  • 1/2 tsp ground cloves*

  • 1/3-1/2 cup raw honey to taste

Note: Scale up or down to best suit your needs. *Ginger, cinnamon, and cloves are optional, but it adds a bit of personality, if ya ask me.

Instructions

  1. Simmer elderberries and spices in water, uncovered, over low heat for at least 45 minutes*.

  2. Turn off heat and let berries steep for at least 1 hour.

  3. When cooled to room temperature, strain using cheesecloth or a fine mesh strainer reserving the berries. You can use the ‘elderberry mush’ to make this.

  4. Add half as much honey to your elderberry liquid or more to taste. More honey may preserve it longer.

  5. Label with the day you prepared it and its expiry date.

*Cooking elderberries for at least 45 minutes deactivates the toxins naturally found in elderberries.
